Choosing the Gun
Ok, so you know what Division you are in, which Power Factor,Trigger
Style, Mag Type, you want.
Can we pick our gun now??? Here are some commonly used
manufacturers for IPSC style guns :
Infinity Firearms (SVI)
STI International Inc (STI)
Beretta USA
Colt's Manufacturing Company Inc. (Colt)
Glock Inc.
Kimber Mfg. Inc.
Para-Ordnance Inc.
Sturm,Ruger & Co.
Smith & Wesson
Surf these sites, make some notes of which guns you like and what price
range it is at. What you want to do is find someone who owns one and ask
nicely to see it and to possibly shoot it. This is the only way to truly
see if you like the gun. Try to shoot as many as you can on your list
before you make that final decision.
Some GOOD IPSC Gunsmiths/Suppliers are :
Gunnar Christensen at Armco Machine & Plating (Prince George, BC)
Kelly Abram at Smoking Gun FX (Coquitlam, BC)
Len Kucey at The Phoenix Range & Gun Shop (Edmonton, AB)
You may also find a member has exactly the gun you want for sale and / or
knows of a good supplier that is fair. I can't stress it enough to ASK
around before you buy. Don't forget that you will need to normally have
some gunsmithing done, so consider that into your budget. Standard /
Production Division guns can range from $400-$3000
and $1500-$5000
for an Open Division gun. |

Standard Division Guns
So now we know what Division we wish to shoot and explained Power Factor we are required to make. This helps us to narrow
down choosing a gun and caliber for Standard Division.
In Standard Division the more "common" caliber's you see are 9mm (Minor), .45 (Major) and the probably the most common is .40S&W
(Major).
Obviously with a Minor gun your are at a disadvantage from the start for point scoring. Why would someone shoot Minor? There are many
reasons:
- Less Recoil
- 9mm ammo is cheap.
- 9mm brass is cheap and easily found.
- Common guns in caliber. (E.g.. Beretta, Glock, Browning High Power).
- etc. etc.
The .40's and .45's have their good and bad points as well. Definitely you make Major but they can also be loaded down to Minor if you so
choose.
.40's - .40 brass is cheap and easily found. (Law Enforcement Caliber).
.45's - Less recoil (big 220gr bullet), Brass not as common anymore.
In the end the caliber you choose is up to you. I'm just pointing out the most common. |
