Rip Mike Toma

Just came to my attention that one of the godfathers of IPSC, Mike Toma recently passed away.

He died in a tragic boating accident on Lake Isle August 1st.

For those who don’t know him, he was one of the few that started IPSC in Canada, and was a gunsmith in Edmonton for many years

RIP my dear friend, and condolences to the family.

Mike was for a time the best IPSC shooter in Alberta, and I believe he was the first Alberta shooter to attend a World Shoot.

At the time he had more intense practice sessions than any of the rest of us. He would frequently use at least 75 rounds in his practice sessions, which was lot in the days before Dillon reloading presses.

Linda and I are sorry to hear of his passing.

Mike was the gunsmith at The Firing Line, the precursor to Wild West, about a hundred years ago. An excellent gunsmith, he was never too busy to chat and answer dumb questions from shooters like me.

I reconnected with him earlier this summer at a WRAS match at CHAS. He was still the same jovial, friendly guy, who greatly enjoyed people. We are diminished.

Update, cross confirmed from multiple sources.

Mike and his girlfriend were boating on Lake Isle. A powerboat went by and swamped their boat, and didn't stop. They struck out for shore. The girlfriend had a life jacket on. Mike did not. He was very portly, and possibly didn't have one that fit. On the swim to shore, Mike may have had a heart attack. The girlfriend made it to shore and survived. No help came for an hour.

Extra sad that his girlfriend had to witness it.

I thought that those that knew him would want to know.

Stay safe. DVC
